I have been looking all over the web for a proper response to this situation and this is only one that I have found so far.

However, from the press reports that I have seen, Mr Reyes converted to Judaism to marry his wife. So, the question arises does the Church still consider him to be a Catholic? As far as I can determine it is not clear if Mr Reyes has renounced his Jewish conversion is some way and formally rejoined the Catholic Church. Nor is it clear whether Mr Reyes was honest withe priest who carried out the baptism and fully explained the situation. I assume that the Reyes's wedding took place in a synagogue, rather then in a Church and without the benefit of Catholic clergy. I also understand that Mr. Reyes undertook when he got married to raise any children as Jews. If it is accepted that this undertaking was a sincere and honest at the time it was given, then there is little ground for thinking that was any genuine hope, that any children would be raised as Catholics. A psychologist, at least in the reports I have seen, has suggested that Mr Reyes has a personality disorder and that he should be supervised when with his children. The implication is that he is not completely himself, but unwell and may not have the full capacity to act with free will. In essence the question is what is the religious status of a Jewish child, (since Judaism holds that the child of a Jewish mother is Jewish) and born at the time to Jewish parents, (we are not dealing here with a case of disparity of cults) who is later baptised against the express wish of the mother? Is this a case of a forced conversion? Can a child be both Jewish and Catholic? My feeling is that Mr Reyes was acting out and expressing his anger towards his former wife, by bahaving in a way that he knew would be very provocative to her. In other words his prime motivation was not to assure his child's salvation through the Church, but I don't suppose that impinges on the theological issue at hand.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12830278913479511794noreply@blogger.com
